Bridgeport teen earns President's Award
BRIDGEPORT - Deborah Simms, executive director of the Charles Smith Foundation, isn't surprised by the latest accolade bestowed on 18-year-old Ali Langston. "Ali really is a remarkable young man," Simms said. Langston, a Bridgeport resident who is a senior at Weston High School, recently received a President's Volunteer Service Award. "He's a mentor and a big brother to a lot of people here," Simms said. The award given by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was created to recognize people of all ages who have made serving a central part of their lives. Before turning 18 last month, Langston had completed more than 4,000 hours of community service.

Teacher and her mother are 'hands on' with students
SEBASTIAN - When you look around Mary Strickler's fifth grade classroom at the Sebastian Elementary School, you'll find 23 students and Strickler's mother.  Her mother, Anne Douglas, volunteers three days a week, helping out with clerical tasks as well as a gardening project that is part of a "Hands-On Habitat" grant.  Offering such unusual opportunities to her students is just one of the things that earned Strickler Teacher of the Year honors from her peers at Sebastian Elementary. Last November, Strickler also earned the coveted National Board Certified Teacher designation, which is the highest credential in the teaching profession.

Students Learn About The Outdoors
NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco County students spent part of their summer vacations learning about the outdoors while enhancing the beauty of local parks. The 12-day "Parks Promote Pride" endeavor ended last week. Sponsored by the Florida Learn and Serve program, the Schwettman Education Center and the city of New Port Richey, the project involved 25 young people. Participants toured city parks, such as the James E. Grey Preserve, and helped build picnic tables, benches, signs, trash can holders and birdhouses, among other projects. The students also researched, created and designed pamphlets to promote environmental protection.
