With President’s Day next week and Super Tuesday just behind us, this month NSLC is featuring resources on service-learning and civic education and citizenship in Featured Library Resources. For even more resources on this topic, take a look at NSLC’s Hot Topics on Citizenship and Civic Engagement and see where they can take you and your students!

This month, we’re presenting three new kinds of service-learning electronic tools to help you stay up-to-date on service-learning resources and events. Our new mini Fact Sheets will allow you to stay up on new service-learning research more quickly; RSS feeds will help you learn about new service-learning publications every month; and the NSLC podcast will let you catch service-learning teleconferences, webinars, and other audio events from your mp3 player. Read about all three new tools under New from NSLC.

And, don’t forget that NSLC is more than a virtual warehouse of service-learning information and resources. We also have a physical library (the nation’s largest on service-learning) located in beautiful Scotts Valley, in the Bay Area of California. If you’re planning to be in the area, contact us at info@servicelearning.org to plan a visit or come to our open house February 27, 2008 from 11-6 PST. We’d love to see you!

Finally, many thanks to those of you who completed NSLC’s annual user assessment. We very much appreciate your feedback and will be using it to develop new resources and services over the coming months. If you didn’t have a chance to respond, we’ve held the survey open for one more week (until this Friday 2/15/08). Please make your voice heard: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3AIl_2bC8xIfCvKw2URI2n1g_3d_3d.

Featured Program Advisor: Campus Compact

It brings us great pleasure to announce that Campus Compact has joined the team as the Program Advisor for the Higher Education sector. Because commitment to excellence and collaboration across service-learning audiences is critical to a vital Clearinghouse, Program Advisors provide the Clearinghouse with sector-specific guidance and expertise. Campus Compact, like all NSLC Program Advisors, was selected for this role because of the high quality research, practice, and advocacy they bring to the service-learning community. Leading Campus Compact's efforts for NSLC will be Maureen F. Curley, president of the national Campus Compact organization, and Julie Plaut, head of Campus Compact’s national academic initiatives.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents-representing some 6 million students-who are dedicated to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. For two decades, Campus Compact has led a growing movement to ensure that students graduate with the knowledge and experience to tackle society’s most pressing issues. The organization’s national office and network of 32 state offices provide training, resources, advocacy, research, funding, and information sharing to help higher education institutions create service-learning and community engagement initiatives that benefit all involved.

See below for more information about Maureen Curley and Julie Plaut. To learn more about Campus Compact and all of the NSLC Program Advisors, visit:
http://www.servicelearning.org/about_us/prog_advisors/index.php.

Maureen F. Curley, president of the national Campus Compact organization, has more than 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, concentrating in the areas of community service and public policy. Among other leadership positions, Maureen has served as Director of Public Policy for the Community Service Society of New York and as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Service Alliance, where she oversaw distribution of $12 million in grants to support AmeriCorps community service-learning and mentoring programs. She also founded the Forum for Women Leaders of Nonprofit Organizations. Most recently she was the Chief Relationship Officer for Bridgestar, where she developed services to connect executive-level managers with career and board opportunities in the nonprofit sector. Maureen has taught courses on nonprofit and volunteer management at Columbia University, New York University, and UMass-Boston. Currently she serves on the board of directors of the National Service-Learning Partnership and Friends of the Children - Boston. She holds a B.A. in political science from Emmanuel College and a master’s in human services administration from Antioch University New England.

Julie Plaut is head of Campus Compact’s national academic initiatives. Her work focuses on preparing and recognizing the next generation of engaged leaders and scholars; fostering research to inform good practice; and deepening higher education institutions’ intentional and active commitment to their distinctive civic missions. She brings to the Program Advisor role 20 years of experience with service-learning in higher education. As an undergraduate student at Stanford University, she initiated a service-learning option that grew into a community organizing track in the Urban Studies Program and launched COOL’s first national grant program supporting teams of faculty, community partners, and students developing service-learning courses. At Indiana University, where she earned a Ph.D. in history, she taught service-learning courses and helped to establish and lead the campus service-learning office. She then worked at Minnesota Campus Compact, developing new partnerships, writing proposals and publications, organizing numerous professional development and networking events, and administering Learn and Serve America and other programs. Julie’s work is grounded in an asset-based approach to collaboration and change and a deep commitment to creating just, democratic, and sustainable communities.

NSLC How-Tos:
  e-Library:

In our nearly 1,000 item (and growing), easy-to-use e-library you can find free materials related to service-learning that can be viewed and downloaded full-text right to your desktop. Search by title, author, keyword, and publication date – or just search by ‘all fields’ to find a word or phrase anywhere in the catalog record.
http://www.servicelearning.org/library/lib_cat/fulltext.php.

Tips:
  • Search for an exact phrase by using quotation marks (e.g. “civic education”)
  • Try narrowing your search by sector. Put a checkmark in one or more of the sector boxes in the advanced search to get more relevant results. Or if you know you only want beginner or advanced resources, try limiting with the starter, expert, and classic checkboxes at the bottom of the catalog search page.
  • Use * in place of the end of a word to search for words with a range of endings (e.g., searching for “educat*” will find “education” “educator,” “educating,” and “educators”.
  • Use ^ to denote the beginning of a field (e.g. searching for ^theory in title will find all records with titles beginning with “theory”)
  • Try using terms in a different order if you’re doing a complex search
And, don’t forget that Learn and Serve American grantees can borrow any of the print materials from NSLC’s over 6,500 item print library collection.

Greenhouses by Wayne County Community Learning Centers (A Learn and Serve America Subgrantee)
Greenhouses by Wayne County Community Learning Centers (WCCLC) project for enhancing the beautification and neighborhood improvement has collaborated with the students in the 21st Century CKCLC to expand their activities by building a greenhouse on site to help them to keep the gardens going year around. Our students currently are working on a garden at their sites and will donate the produce to the local food bank, during reflections the students have come up with ideas for the next step of their gardening and beautification projects. Our greenhouse project will enable the students to have year round planting to better support their gardening and beautification community projects. The group will construct greenhouses on site as well as help repair and update the existing greenhouse at Buffalo Elementary. They will, as a group, learn the vegetation and how it grows by having an expert greenhouse owner come and demonstrate what grows in the area. They will also have volunteers from AmeriCorps, community, parents and grandparents. The students will keep data in their journals, on what will grow in the area, what they will need to grow this type of vegetation, which person(s) will take daily care of the greenhouse, and as a group keep measurements of the plants for reflection. The staff will be responsible for keeping the students on task and the children will be responsible for the property and care giving to the plants.

Greenhouses by WCCLC project will enhance the program of Gardens by CKCLC by allowing the children to work in the greenhouse everyday and have ownership in a garden all year long. In addition to the beautification and gardening projects the students will assess community needs and choose four additional community service projects. Examples of current projects the group is participating in; collecting cell phones for the retirement homes; sending packages to the military; and continue working with the Huntington City Mission. The students will do community need surveys to determine additional projects.

For more information about this project, please contact Mrs. Lori Murdock at Playmates Child Development Center/ 21st Century Wayne County Community Learning Centers, 3603 Piedmont Rd., N., Huntington, WV 25704, wvlac@aol.com - http://www.playmates-childcare.com.
